Concepts in Speech Therapy
There are many terms used in the field of speech therapy, and in this course,
we will cover the most frequently used ones.
Language: It is the system of sounds and symbols created
consciously and purposefully by humans to establish communication with others,
and to express their feelings and thoughts. It can be said that language, like
other social phenomena, is strongly influenced by the societal system, so that
it flourishes with the progress of its owners and is destroyed by their neglect
of it.

Speech therapy aims to improve the quality of life of patients who suffer from the above-mentioned disorders. It does so by evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders that affect a person’s ability to communicate or swallow.
Speech therapy is necessary as people affected are more likely to develop emotional and mental illness, depression, loneliness, behavioral disorders, etc. Speech and language disorders thus affect the overall quality of life for the person. Early detection and treatment of speech problems can improve the outlook for most patients and can keep the problem from progressing or worsening.
