The word demography comes from two ancient Greek words, demos, meaning "the

people," and graphy meaning "writing about or recording something" or graph

meaning shape or description. Demography literally translated from the Greek term

means "writing about the people"; a description of people.

Demography is the study of the size, composition, dynamics and distribution of human

population. Such study is important because the size of the aggregate (combination) of

persons that constitute the population, its standard of living, its social system and

culture are all interrelated and have serious implications for the health and well- being

of members of that population (Abanobi, 2004).
