1. Basic Concepts in Speech Therapy

There are many terms used in the field of speech therapy, and in this course, we will cover the most frequently used ones.

Language: It is the system of sounds and symbols created consciously and purposefully by humans to establish communication with others, and to express their feelings and thoughts. It can be said that language, like other social phenomena, is strongly influenced by the societal system, so that it flourishes with the progress of its owners and is destroyed by their neglect of it.

Speech: It is the expression of oneself through language, which includes the intonation, selection, and arrangement of spoken sounds in the verbal chain according to the rules and levels of linguistic organization of the environment in which one lives. The spoken words express an idea or feeling, and it is the individual use of language by the speaker.

Voice: In its general concept, it is the transfer of energy from a vibrating body into waves that pass through matter, as this term is used to express what is heard when sound waves penetrate the human ear. For humans, it is a group of sounds produced by the periodic vibrations of the vocal cords in the larynx by the expiratory air, which amplify and modify as they pass through the back of the throat and mouth, and partially propagate in the pharynx and nasal cavity, and form in a mobile and flexible form for all these organs, which form the sound matter, or in another sense, the linguistic sounds, and sound is characterized by the characteristics of intensity, pitch, rhythm, and timbre.

Articulation: It is the coordinated movement of the vocal and vocal organs necessary to form phonemic units that are incorporated into the speech chain.

Delay: Delay is referred to in children who do not suffer from mental retardation and who have a low level of linguistic or academic acquisition compared to their peers of the same age.

Disorder: The disorder is a state of instability or anxiety that the individual has as a result of abnormal functioning of a particular organ, function, or organ, and in this context, the speech therapist uses this term and tries to determine its nature.
